Marquette County Facts

Marquette county was founded and developed because of its rich deposits of iron ore. Miners from around the world found their way here to make a better life for their families bringing ore up from the veins beneath. Michigamme, Ishpeming, Negaunee, Republic and Forsynth Township all have historical societies and museums that showcase the spirit of each area’s pioneers and their way of life.

In the past several years, Marquette county has been awarded two major awards as one of the top ten finalists in the All American City competition and was named as one of the Most Livable Cities. Marquette county is located in the center of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, which was recently named one of the top ten destinations in the world to visit, and is home to Northern Michigan University and one of two Olympic Training Centers in the United States.
