About Us

Norlite is a family-owned 99-bed skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, established on Homestead Street in Marquette in 1972.  We’re conveniently located next to UPHS-Marquette, so transport takes less than 5 minutes from door-to-door.  Our medical teams share many of the same personnel, meaning your care can be better managed across the healthcare continuum.

Come take a tour!  Visits can be scheduled 24/7 by calling the main line.

A variety of 18 to 20 distinct Activities take place each day, with daily staples including Coffee & Exercise at 9:30am, to Daily Happy Hour at 2:15pm, and ending with Bingo, starting at 7:00pm.  There’s never a dull moment at Norlite!  New Residents are impressed with the opportunities for socialization, the customer service, and the warm family-like treatment from staff.

Norlite's Mission Statement

We believe that each Resident is entitled to the best possible care through safe, engaging, and person-centered programming. We recognize the inherent dignity of each individual, who is part of a family and a community, and who has physical, social, emotional and spiritual needs. Our goal is to assist each Resident to maintain his or her highest level of health & functioning as long as possible, and to ensure they live their life to the fullest while on our campus!

Our Community

Marquette County was founded and developed because of its rich deposits of iron ore. Miners from around the world found their way here to make a better life for their families bringing ore up from the veins beneath. Michigamme, Ishpeming, Negaunee, Republic and Forsyth Township all have historical societies and museums that showcase the spirit of each area’s pioneers and their way of life.

Marquette County is home to arguably the best hiking, biking, kayaking and camping in the world.  Retirees have increasingly flocked to the area, realizing just what it means to live in “God’s Country.”

In the past several years, Marquette county has been awarded two major awards as one of the top ten finalists in the All American City competition and was named as one of the Most Livable Cities. Marquette county is located in the center of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, which was recently named one of the top ten destinations in the world to visit, and is home to Northern Michigan University and one of two Olympic Training Centers in the United States.

Our Team

All departments work together to provide the daily care and services for our Residents. Our goal is to achieve a home-like atmosphere, while simultaneously maintaining the highest standards of medical care. The team includes:

  • Administrator, Director of Nursing, Education Director & Infection Preventionist.
  • Nursing staff consisting of RN’s and LPN’s. These nurses are assigned to each of Norlite’s wings and are responsible for administering medications, treatments, assessments, and notification to the physician and family of any changes in the Residents’ condition.
  • Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA’s) are direct caregivers who are responsible for seeing to the Residents’ daily needs related to bathing, dressing, eating and personal care.
  • Certified Wound Care & Restorative staff members promote maintaining of physical functioning through specialized exercise, range of motion and skin rehabilitation.
  • Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy is provided through U.P. Rehab, who has contracted at Norlite for over 15 years. Therapists evaluate and treat all residents referred here for specific treatments with a goal of improving Residents to goals established upon admission.  Norlite has successfully rehabilitated over 500 Residents since 2017, discharging them back to their prior setting in the community.
  • Social Work assists in the Discharge Planning for all Residents, ensuring the appropriate services such as home health and physician appointments are scheduled to provide discharging Residents with the best chance for success at home. Our licensed social workers also ensure Residents receive excellent psychosocial treatment while at Norlite, looking for opportunities to reduce medications while finding nonpharmacological interventions to prevent symptoms.
  • The Admissions Coordinator is responsible for coordinating admissions, giving facility tours and meeting with potential residents and their families to answer any questions. The goal for each admission is for every new Resident to feel the transition from hospital (or home) to the facility is seamless and pain-free.
  • Activities Department is responsible for evaluating residents’ preferences for planned events both within and outside of the facility. Daily there are between 18 and 20 distinct Activities programs – Residents can stay busy from 8am to 8pm; the Activities are designed for a wide variety of Residents and at many levels of cognitive functioning.  Popular activities offerings include daily exercise, coffee & current events, sensory stimulation, balloon volleyball, cottonball fights, broomstick hockey, wheelchair yoga, church services, musical entertainment, therapy animals, volunteer visitors and social events within the facility.  They also plan outside events of interest such as the casino, restaurant outings, the circus, Willow Farms, a picnic at Presque Isle, Christmas lights bus tour, and more!
  • Maintenance Staff is in-house seven days a week, available to find solutions to most any facility issue, including snow removal on the grounds.
  • Culinary Staff prepares menus a month in advance and Resident diets are reviewed regularly by a Registered Dietician. All meals are prepared fresh, offering a main selection, a special substitute, and an “always available” menu. Essentially, if you have a request, we’ll try our best to make it happen, as long as it is within the Resident’s physician-authorized diet. If you would like to join your family member for any meal of the day, please call ahead and ask how!
  • Multi-disciplinary Care conferences are held every three months for our residents. You will be notified by mail of the date and time. Contact the Care Conference Coordinator, Lynda Laakko.
  • Our beautician comes to the facility every Tuesday. Hair appointments can be arranged in the Front Office; there is a charge based on the service provided.
